Why B vitamins are so important for energy?

B vitamins or B Complex vitamins are a group of 8 water soluble vitamins. Included in this group are: B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate) and B12 (cobalamin). Some of these vitamins, such as B1, B2, B3 and B6, are crucial for making energy in our bodies.

So how do these vitamin B complexes maintain our body’s energy cycles?

Used in energy production.

The most crucial use of B vitamins, especially, B1, B2 and B3, are for energy production. Used to breakdown carbohydrates, fats and proteins into fuel for our cells in our body. Without these vitamins, we would feel tired, have a lack of energy and not be able to utilise our food for energy. As they are water-soluble, it means they are not stored in the body and need to be regularly replaced.

Elevate Brain functions

B vitamins optimise your energy levels because of their involvement with the brain’s important functions. The B vitamins transport oxygen flow around the body and to the brain, which allows it to function for a more extended period. Research shows that when the mind is energised, it also improves your mental health as well as your concentration and focus. Vitamin B1 and B3 are mostly known for effectively supporting mental wellbeing and mood as they help produce many of our brains neurotransmitters which regulate our mood and which can elevate our brain function.

Reduce stress and fatigue

There are days where you are feeling stressed, busy and overthinking everything which can dramatically affect your health. Revitalising the body with B vitamins can benefit you by reducing your oxidative stress levels so your body can maintain a state of calmness. B2 is often associated with reducing tiredness and stress levels by allowing your body to absorb more iron needed for the production of our red blood cells. Without red blood cells carrying oxygen, our bodies can feel tired and common symptoms are shortness of breath.

Optimise strength and immunity

Another element of increasing energy levels is strengthening your body’s immunity. B vitamins like B2 and B1 can stimulate your immune system by regulating the absorption of nutrients from your diet, which can be used to fight off infections.

Many of the B vitamins have important roles within the body and work collectively to enhance, recharge and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

What happens if my vitamin B levels are low?

These vitamins are depleted considerably by other elements in our life and because they are water-soluble are easily lost! Unfortunately, Vitamin B deficiencies can be caused by high alcohol consumption, the contraceptive pill, sweating and stress. This can cause fatigue, tiredness and poor mental health. If you feel tired, have a lack of energy, aren’t able to function correctly, then it may be possible that you need to supplement your diet with a vitamin B complex?
